RE: LUXE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO INVITE SOME OF OUR ESTEEMED READERS AND FOLLOWERS TO A PRIVATE JOHNNIE WALKER SCOTCH TASTING. THE VENUE FOR THE INTIMATE AFFAIR WAS COCO LEZZONE, IN TORONTO’S UPSCALE YORKVILLE AREA. By Dion Walcott
The evening began with a rather unusual entrance into Coco Lezzone, as the guests were escorted into the back of the restaurant, through the kitchen, to a private seating area, providing an overall feeling of exclusivity.
Having the luxury of seeing where and how the delicacies that they would soon have the pleasure of indulging in were prepared, allowed them the opportunity to experience and appreciate the true culinary arts, often overlooked.
Once everyone was seated and comfortable, they were greeted by their Johnnie Walker ambassador for the evening. The ambassador promised that the tasting would be a unique interaction with Johnnie Walker Whiskies and would provide an in-depth immersion into scotch and its rich history.
The table set with Johnnie Walker Red, Black and Blue labels for tasting. It did not take long before the ambassador treated the group to the historical context of the iconic brand, explaining that Walker’s Kilmarnock Whisky was the scotch’s original name and was brought to life by John “Johnnie” Walker after he began selling his product in his grocery shop in Ayrshire, Scotland.
It was not until Walker’s death in 1857 that the brand became popular, and as explained, it was his son Alexander Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II who were largely responsible for the favored brand we know today.
The dialogue quickly prompted a series of questions and answers between the guests and brand ambassador, ranging from what helps to enhance the flavor of Johnnie Walker to why the label on the bottle is on an angle: both of which were answered, to everyone’s surprise. Who would have thought that sliced strawberries with a dash of pepper or segments of chocolate would enrich the taste and extract deeper flavor?
The identifying characteristic of the Johnnie Walker bottle, its label, is slanted at an angle of 24° as it allows for text to be made larger and more visible, proving that when it comes to making a great scotch, it’s all in the details: flavor complexity, sultry smoothness and a prominent, visual representation.
While Re: Luxe is committed to providing one-of-a-kind experiences for many, there is something to be said about spending an evening in an intimate setting, interacting with our readers. An Evening with Johnnie Walker was the first of a series of tasting events that we look forward to hosting for our highly regarded readers and followers in the near future.
