There is nothing like the pure pleasure of driving a luxury car this well made, that feeling of stability (a longer, wider platform, front double-wishbone suspension, rear five-link suspension, Dynamic Damper Control, giving the car precise sports-car-like handling), and serious power at your footstep.

A four-door sedan that runs like a supercar. That’s the 2020 M850i xDrive Gran Coupe, just launching into the Canadian market. This is a car for drivers. Shelve that talk about self-driving vehicles. This is a luxury car with real pep – TwinPower 4.4-liter eight cylinder Turbo engine, 523 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque, which allows acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds. But it’s not to be driven irresponsibly. It’s for highway driving where you need that bicep flex to punch past the transport truck in the middle lane.

Then settle back. In the city it gets you deftly around closures, jams, cyclists. The Gran Coupe is all quiet, no nonsense. Check out all the interior luxury options here.

Cynics will always question those who say there is a linear connection between a vehicle at this level of engineering and a feeling of happiness. They’ve probably never driven a car like this before. It’s symphony at your finger tips, backed up by safety options that lead the industry, almost like a driver safety gnome sitting on your shoulder. You just drive – the car has your back.

Whatever your mood is, it all changes when you get behind the wheel of the M850i xDrive Gran Coupe. I decided to shelve everything and get out of the city, just me and my car. This became a personal island, a sound and sensory experience in the cabin unlike few other luxury vehicles out there. Beautiful handling. Total comfort and relaxation.

Four months ago we drove the BMW M850i xDrive Coupe down the U.S. west coast. This time it was north through Ontario’s Muskoka region, a popular respite from city living. No city in North America is growing at the frenetic pace of Toronto. So people there are going to places that are simpler, more clear, for relaxation, and to chill. That’s what a luxury car at this level helps provide.
