There are many things to love about the 2019 BMW 740Le xDrive Sedan. Powerful engine, excellent fuel economy (hybrid car), large trunk, extravagant interior, smooth, stable handling – go down the list. One of the true difference-makers though, compared to other super luxury sedans in its class (the Mercedes-Benz S-Class comes to mind), is the abundance of comfort that back-seat passengers will enjoy.
One can envision a business executive riding along, chauffeur-driven, with all the luxury features to enable him or her to do their job, at a finger tip, while riding in comfort. Our test car was equipped with Black Extended Nappa Leather. Even the tallest of people can stretch out in comfort (the 7 Series has a long wheelbase, more than rival cars), use the foot rest, pull out a small desk for a laptop, or to work on a smart phone, all while using their own infotainment screen, and adjusting their seat comfort. The window sun shades offer even more privacy.
The interior of this car truly is superior. During our test drive, five people sat comfortably in the car, making it an ideal family car as well as a car for business. Or, maybe there’s just two of you, and you want a muscular, spacious luxury option for those tight city drives, or pick-up on the highways where the turbo engine comes into play. The 7 Series offers five different turbo engines, ranging from a four-cylinder plug-in hybrid to a V12. Transmission is 8-speed automatic.
The ease of your ride along one of the local highways is another great feature with the car. The agility of a car this size was a surprise. Our six-hour drive to Montreal along the 401 was one of the smoothest in recent memory.
The car has everything for the modern executive, plus it’s a little less expensive than the S-Class. The technology features are almost too numerous to mention – BMW iDrive infotainment system in the front and back with a 10.2-inch touch screen, voice and gesture controls, 16-speaker Harmon Kardon surround-sound system for a concert-quality music experience. For the business executive on the go, there is a Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth, and USB ports.
For the driver, safety features are paramount, a level that has become standard in super luxury sedans like this one. Active Lane Keep Assistant supports the steering, using a multiple area surveillance radar systems and cameras to keep the car in the middle of a lane. The system keeps the car centred to avoid collisions. Parking Assist Plus provides surround camera, rear camera, top, panoramic and 3D views for those tight downtown parking spots.
All in all, luxury car driving at its finest, incredible attention to detail
